Did you know that only 10% of Indian students end up going to college?
One of the key reasons for this high dropout rate is that these 50 million Indian high school students have no or minimal access to professional career guidance. To solve this problem, Saahil Narang, a St. Xavier’s College topper, started Get Set Sorted (GSS), which has emerged as the top educational startup in India from 200+ startups who competed in StartEdu by Unitus Seed Fund, and has won Rs.5 lakh. Get Set Sorted provides end-to-end career guidance solutions to school and college students, which include career assessments, counselling and experiential content.
Get Set Sorted started as a 3-month mentoring program with 50+ high school students at a low income school in New Delhi. Within 6 months, it has grown to an integrated career portal that has helped 2000+ students across 18 schools. The Get Set Sorted process starts with a career assessment – students can either take the Career Indicator Test or Stream Selector Test – tested and adapted to Indian standards. Students can then talk virtually with an experienced career counsellor or choose a mentor from 100+ young achievers across 60 different careers. Finally, they can explore experiential content on 200+ careers and can ask any career queries, thus, making their career choice in a structured and scientific way.
Saahil was later joined by his friends – Kalpesh from IIT Bombay and Dheeraj Chowdhary, an MBA from FMS, Delhi who was working with Aspiring Minds. Saahil says, “Coming from a small town, I realized how lucky I was to get the right career guidance, because of which, I got to attend a premier college and got one of the best campus jobs (Bain & Co.). However, I saw that my peers, just followed the ‘herd mentality’ or succumbed to ‘parental pressure’ and ended up being dissatisfied in their careers. Thus, I took one of the toughest decisions of my life – quit a high paying corporate job to follow a dream – a dream of giving back to the next generation and change the way how educational guidance is done in India.”
Ecstatic on the win, the 23-year-old entrepreneur further adds, “Of course, winning the USF competition has garnered a lot of investor interest. We believe, getting the right mentors, who have built educational businesses, is more important than raising funds. There is a huge market potential as none of the players in this space has been able to capture even 1% market share. We envision ourselves to be the ‘one point solution’ for anyone confused about their career and are completely focussed on product development and innovation with many products leveraging data and networks in the pipeline. To gain scale, we are collaborating with educational institutes, NGOs and government.”
