This new free app (available in Apple’s AppStore for iOS devices) makes it easy for everyone to do the right thing. It makes it easy to find restaurants that care about animals and offer vegan, vegetarian or humanely-raised options.
San Diego based nonprofit organization America For Animals announces the completion of an Indiegogo-Funded restaurant-locating app that will allow consumers to exclusively patron those restaurants that provide either humanely raised, vegetarian or vegan options. The initiative, aptly named The Humane Eating Project raised over $10,000 on Indiegogo.
The Humane Eating Project has a database of over 16,000 restaurants. Only restaurants that have vegan/vegetarian menus or explicitly state that they have humane or humanely raised menu options are included. America for Animals, which advocates for animal welfare, has made the app free to make it easy for everyone to do the right thing and make the right choice when dining.
What’s In The App
The Humane Eating Project will set a precedent in the world of restaurant applications. In addition to an extensive database, it will be a full¬service locator, complete with Google mapping of restaurants, driving directions and user reviews of restaurants.
A key feature to the The Humane Eating Project app is the “Watch List.” The watch list informs users of restaurants who are selling foods like foie gras, veal and shark-fin soup. While all factory farmed animals face cruelty, there are some that people find particularly offensive and this feature makes it easy for people to not accidentally patronize restaurants serving these foods.
“The passion comes from seeing animals in pain. Investigative videos; what goes on in factories, you cannot un¬see it,” said Drees. “The happy farmer with the happy cows, that’s the rare exception, not the norm. These are concentration camps for animals. You have to open yourself up to the issue and take the time to consume information about these factory farms. The information is hard to digest. You just have to take the time to step up.”
